Abstract
The disbandment of the Commonwealth departments associated with the Governmentaldivestment in airports in the 1990s resulted in a void in airport pavement technology, practiceand innovation development in Australia. In 2016, Defence and other airport ownersestablished the Airport Pavement Research Program to investigate and implement a range offlexible pavement innovations. To date, these innovations have included performance-basedasphalt specification, ungrooved runway surfaces, incorporating reclaimed asphalt in asphaltsurfaces, non-destructive testing and standardised sprayed sealing specification. In thefuture, efforts are expected to focus on further sustainability initiatives, early life surfacepreservation technologies and improved construction methods.
