Abstract
This paper describes and demonstrates a method for evaluating middle-years mathematics textbooks. The method involves the development of two sets of criteria: a set of principles that reflect the curriculum documents relevant to the context in which books to be examined are intended to be used; and a set of specific curriculum goals for a significant mathematics content area derived from published research into the teaching and learning of that area. The paper discusses the evaluation of one mathematics textbook and explains its rating against the criteria.
