Abstract
Within the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales lies a rare remnant of rainforest at Terania Creek. Its survival is evidence of a watershed in Australian environmental history – 1979, the year that direct community action saved a forest. The grassroots campaign against the forestry industry and the New South Wales government, that ran over five years, is the subject of Vanessa Bible's book. Bible maintains that although a ‘momentous, unprecedented and highly influential protest of great global importance’ (3), the battle to save Terania Creek has been overshadowed by other environmental protests at Lake Pedder, the Franklin and the Daintree as well as the Green Bans. Yet it was at Terania Creek that many of the tactics that were used in these later campaigns were forged. It is for this reason, the need to acknowledge the importance of the community action at Terania Creek as a turning point, that this book deserves scholarly attention.
