Abstract
Hank Dittmar believed that “we can engage people in planning and sustainability processes in a way that positively affects the outcome” (p. 1). This book was completed by colleagues who helped his family to finalise the book, DIY City, after his death in 2018. Known as both a practical and visionary urban strategist and advocate for small-scale and transit-oriented development on both sides of the Atlantic (USA and England), the book traces the evolution of his own thinking about urban planning issues through key points in his career. These challenges are as relevant today as they were then.
