Abstract
Human reproduction, particularly the study of pregnancy, is a challenging field of medical research. Humans can be used in medical research studies with informed consent, but the idea of consent is blurred when we consider the rights of an unborn fetus and the risk that any medical procedure may pose to the developing conceptus. These considerations make obtaining samples of organs associated with an ongoing pregnancy difficult, and force researchers to use suboptimal in vitro or animal research models which limits the depth of investigation. To overcome these issues, there are continuing research efforts aimed at creating innovative ways to model human reproductive tissues. It is hoped that better modeling will enable researchers to delve further into human reproductive biology despite its associated ethical challenges. This chapter will outline the current approaches to study placental development, the potential for using embryonic stem cells to mimic initial stages of placental development and the role that a three-dimensional (3D) culture system may play in such research.
