This chapter offers a theoretical examination of the interplay between affective relationships, political ideology, and media consumption patterns, with a particular focus on alternative journalism. Drawing on fan studies scholarship, it will propose a novel framework for understanding how emotional attachments to political ideologies drive the consumption of partisan and alternative media outlets, while simultaneously fueling the disparagement of legacy or ideologically divergent media as “fake news.” The chapter contextualizes the current media landscape as characterized by the proliferation of alternative news sources and the erosion of trust in traditional media institutions. Within this context it will explore how ideological fandom (Barnes 2022) drives emotional attachments to political ideologies that mirror the passionate engagement observed in fan communities. The chapter analyses how these affective relationships shape media consumption habits, arguing that they create a self-reinforcing cycle of ideological confirmation and emotional gratification. It examines the psychological mechanisms underlying this process, including confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance, and the role of emotions in information processing. Special attention is paid to the ways in which alternative media outlets leverage these psychological tendencies to cultivate loyal audiences and foster a sense of community among consumers. Drawing on this argument the chapter concludes by outlining the broader societal implications of these dynamics, including the potential for increased political polarization, the challenges posed to shared reality, and the erosion of trust in democratic institutions. By elucidating the affective underpinnings of alternative media consumption, this chapter contributes to our understanding of contemporary media behaviors and offers valuable insights for scholars, policymakers, and media practitioners grappling with the challenges of our increasingly fragmented information ecosystem.
