Abstract
This chapter reports on how educators at higher education institutions can appropriate emerging technologies to transform pedagogical practices with varying degrees of success. Through these case studies, the chapter illustrates how technologies, not necessarily new technologies, are being used to address teaching and learning challenges. A closed Facebook group, accessible through students mobile phones, is used to mediate articulation and reflection aimed at scaffolding architectural students acquisition of skills to justify design decisions. An anonymous Q&A tool of an institutional LMS, accessible through Short Message Services (SMS) is used in an extended degree programme to support student learning. The case study reports on the use of social media to mediate studio-based learning of final year undergraduate architectural students at the University of Technology in South Africa. One of the challenges of teaching architectural education is how to use design crit (critique) sessions of physically designed artefacts for deep and meaningful learning experiences.
