Abstract
This chapter discusses the state of the art, trends and progress in work on the social aspects of social-ecological systems in research and practice. We first introduce the context in which this book was written. Then we discuss three themes that have emerged in relation to the social aspects of management of social-ecological systems, mainly since the 1980s, and interwoven with Prof. Helen Ross’s academic career: (1) community development and rural extension; (2) natural resource management, conservation and co-management; and (3) social aspects of resilience.
