Abstract
Growing recognition for the application of Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) in sport is down to the fact that sport is increasingly being recognised as a ‘complex system’. The aim of this chapter is to discuss this notion and to present an overview of the features and behaviours of sports systems that make them complex. A short background to complexity theory is provided, followed by a description of the main characteristics of complex systems using sports injury as the leading example. The chapter concludes by highlighting the main systems HFE methods that have, and should continue to, be applied in the context of sports performance and injury prevention,
