Abstract
The journey from trainee to fully-fledged professional is a mixture of excitement, struggle, enjoyable challenge, relief at graduation and then the surprise that comes from embracing the profession’s identity and practice. The question of ‘Who am I as a counselling psychologist?’ will be one that may never be fully answered. This is partly because our professional contexts keep changing, the profession keeps redefining itself and we keep changing as individuals. As we continue the journey of personal/professional growth, we accumulate extensive experience of other people and their struggles, we experience new dimensions of ourselves, and we gain more and more knowledge of how best to help others. In effect, we have become a healing and growth resource for others to draw on, both in our personal and professional lives. The curious thing is that our own growth process is often so incremental that we do not appreciate the significance of our own development. If we stop and reflect on all that has gone into developing our accumulating expertise, we realise that there is much that we could share with other helping professionals. It is in this moment that we might move from prioritising knowledge consumption to knowledge production. Production here refers not to a crass capitalist mechanistic package but an organic offering of substance. We all have something to share, the question is how best to do this.
