Abstract
This final chapter summarises three paradigm shifts in community-environment interactions, following the three key Sections of the book on (1) participation in rural development; (2) environmental governance; and (3) the adoption of a systems view. The shift aligns with the trajectory of Emeritus Professor Helen Ross’s career. Some patterns stand out that call for change—questioning the technocratic neoliberal approach; a need to listen to, form and contemplate alternative scientific narratives; and adopting an ethic of care for community and the environment. This offers opportunities for integrating multiple disciplines and interests in a conjoined community-environment approach through collaborative problem solving, embedded in and enriching complex social-ecological systems. Ultimately, this relies on the ‘Ross legacy’ that values putting communities first.
