Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to discuss the significant contribution that a systems Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) approach can have to understanding and improving sport-related concussion (SRC) management in community sport. To address some of the ongoing issues undermining SRC management, a growing program of research has applied HFE methodologies with the aim of better understanding the intricacies of the community sport context that influence injury management behaviours. The application of such methodologies over previous reductionist approaches offered the opportunity to explore how a variety of known and unknown factors that influence SRC management can differ between stakeholders and levels of the system in the unique context of community sport. The application of HFE methods have wide-ranging utility in not only better understanding SRC management environment in community sport, but also present opportunities to identify and develop systemic level changes to improve management practices in this context. These methods should be used by practitioners to increase understanding of the complex problem of concussion and to support the design of interventions which will lead to better prevention and management of sports concussion.
