Abstract
As we noted at the beginning of the volume, the vocal mechanism has not changed since the documentation of singing pedagogy began 500 years ago. The diversity in musical styles and the pace at which technology has advanced has certainly changed, but we remain relatively uninformed about the origins of singing and the ways in which environment, culture and society interact to influence vocal production and interpretation. In this volume, we have sought to provide an avenue through which practitioners, early career and experienced researchers have attempted to improve the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of diverse music styles. We have also sought to find ways to apply this new pedagogical knowledge for the benefit of our students in the future.
