Abstract
Ontological separation of wild/domesticated and pet/pest animals, frequently restricts some to the ‘natural’ environment and protected areas, and others to the ‘built’ environment such as towns, homes and worksites. Biosecurity, animal management, animal welfare and nature conservation laws in Queensland, Australia, prescribe regulations such as prohibiting release of potential pests to the wild, domestic animal requirements, a duty of care for the welfare of animals for which humans are responsible, and protection of native species. The Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Queensland, Queensland, implemented a Living with Wildlife education campaign and survey about wildlife, domestic species and pest species control methods. This chapter provides a critical reading of 868 participant responses, and argues that dissolving categorical divides such as wild/domestic and pet/pest, and adopting a place-based understanding of local biogeographies will enable a less anthropocentric, speciesist application of law to shared human-animal space.
