Abstract
Where were you on November 11, 1975? The dismissal of the Whitlam Government on 11 November 1975 was a profound development, a stunning shock to most Australians whatever side of the political divide they inhabited. The Dismissal caused deep political and personal ripples in the lives of many Australians, particularly those who had come of age in the 1960s and 1970s. For some it was a marker of what had been gained and what had been lost in these remarkable years. For others directly involved in the events, it was a battle to the political death over principle and power. In this timely collection, 30 prominent Australians recall events on the day Sir John Kerr sacked Gough Whitlam's Labor Government. Leading figures from politics, journalism, the academy and the arts reflect on the significance of the dismissal, and their personal response to a major political crisis, both then and now.
