Abstract
There is increasing recognition of the importance of STEM education internationally. At the same time, instructional approaches have developed without a common understanding of the nature of a quality STEM education. This lack of clarity has led to the adoption of multiple approaches to STEM teaching and learning that include different degrees of discipline integration—few of which take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the critical application of mathematics. In this chapter, we argue that an across the curriculum approach to numeracy provides a new model of STEM integration through which mathematics can be integrated with the other STEM disciplines. In support of this argument, we present two vignettes, drawn from a project that promoted teacher engagement with a rich cross-curricular model of numeracy. These vignettes illustrate how the strategic integration of mathematics can be leveraged to promote student knowledge and understanding in science. Our analysis suggests that this model of STEM integration has potential to enhance learning in both science and mathematics.
