Abstract
The appearance of microbially-mediated foams are a recognised problem in activated sludge plants and which is often correlated with warmer temperatures and an over-abundance of fats, oils and nutrients. The main causative microorganisms are known to belong to the phylum Actinomycetota, in particular to the genus Nocardia of the order Mycobacteriales. Since the early 2000s similar foams have been observed on the shores of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, particularly after heavy rain and flooding events during the summer season. Local beaches have been reported to be exposed to oil and nutrient pollution brought to the coastal sea water by flood and storm waters thereby providing nutrients for microorganisms including nocardiae. The chapter provides an overview on nocardiae and gives examples of results of investigations into the occurrence of nocardiae and other similar taxa belonging to the orders Mycobacteriales and Pseudonocardiales associated with these foaming coastal marine waters from 2003 onwards in this region of Australia.
