Abstract

Psychology Cognitive Sciences
Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that induces euphoria, wakefulness, energy, and confidence. The drug was used widely as a pharmaceutical product until its prohibition under international drug control conventions in 1971. Contemporary use is mainly illegal, with the number of illicit users estimated at between 14 and 53 million worldwide. Excessive use can lead to dependence and paranoia, and it can also increase the risk of cardiovascular and other health and social problems. Despite the extent of methamphetamine use, and resulting harms, no specialized treatment options for this drug have been proved to be effective.
