Abstract
Effective natural resource management relies on understanding how humans conceive of, and interact with, their environment. In this chapter, we focus on two cognitive constructs, mental models and values that are commonly used by researchers to gain insight into this phenomenon. We draw on our research to compare a variety of data collection and analytical methods to elicit mental models and values, including interviews (situated and non-situated), drawing tasks, photovoice and participatory mapping. This paper aims to provide guidance to researchers and practitioners in eliciting mental models and values in the context of managing social-ecological systems, including potential benefits of studying these cognitive constructs simultaneously.
