Measures to reduce violence at major public events: New Year's Eve
Australian violence : contemporary perspectives II
Australian Institute of Criminology
1995
Abstract
New Year's Eve crowd behaviour is popularly linked to notions of civil disorder and violence. Mellor reviewed newspaper coverage from 1950 to 1990, and police and case study reports in an attempt to elucidate this issue. He concludes that it is difficult to identify and predict specific problems which New Year's Eve events present, or to make generalisations about their causes. Even where steps have been taken to prevent and minimise New Year's Eve violence, they are not necessarily reflected in more positive media reporting or a decline in arrest rates.
