Abstract
This final chapter brings together the diverse themes and recommendations of the 13 preceding chapters. Uncertainty about the ingredients of success was a recurring theme in numerous chapters, demonstrating the need for more research on what works in practice. At the same time, the findings of the chapters, in association with the wider literature, provided supportive evidence for nine clear and practical recommendations for improving gender integration in policing. A primary step is for police departments to audit all their human resource management practices from a gender perspective. Police agencies need to ensure that all sources of formal discrimination are removed. Auditing must extend beyond more subtle forms of discrimination which are most likely to be identified by anonymous surveys and other diagnostic tools. Diagnostics need to include data analytics across the career dimensions of recruitment, training, deployment, promotion and retention, as well as experiences of harassment and discrimination. Our reflections on the contributions provided across the chapters also point to consideration of moderate affirmative action policies, including tailor-made recruitment and promotion campaigns, and formal mentoring programmes.
