Learning from Tragedy: The Legacies of Laura and Alice

Abstract
Fatal accidents are rare in outdoor education/recreation. The impact of such loss, however, is far-reaching and permanent. As professionals, our beliefs and confidence in the value of our work can be shaken to the core following such tragedies. After personally experiencing the loss of two participants at very different stages in the author's career, she shares her own reflections of the personal impact of these tragedies. Her decision to become a professional outdoor risk manager at the age of 24, a specialization previously dominated by older and primarily male practitioners, was as a direct result of trying to find meaning from the worst possible outcome on any programme. The author argues the importance of looking up, and out, to better understand, and prevent, injury-causing accidents.
