Routledge
2014
Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the reader with a range of transformative higher education pedagogical practices in southern contexts theorised within the framework of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), using Authentic Learning (AL) as a pedagogical model, which aligns with this theoretical framework. It is comprised of four Parts: the first provides an emphasis on theoretical position of CHAT, the second on Authentic Learning, the third on Emerging Technologies (ETs), and the fourth presents case studies, involving these three areas of concentration in this edited collection. The book has an international focus, with a particular focus on South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, all different countries within the southern hemisphere with their peculiar histories, economies and cultures. It concludes with synthesises the parts to contemplate on how the ideas and applications thereof could suggest a possible transformative model for higher education pedagogy.
