Abstract

young sex workers Indonesia
Sex matters in contemporary Indonesia and Indonesian sexualities are vibrant, complex and constantly under contestation. This innovative volume explores sexual politics in a wide variety of contexts; highlights sexual diversity, as well as opposition to diversity; examines and critiques representations of sexuality; and advances contemporary theorisations of sexuality in non-western settings. Placing sexuality centre-stage and locating it within the specific historical context of the Reformasi era, this text explores a wide variety of geographical sites, a diverse group of Indonesian actors, and an even wider engagement with different aspects of sexuality. Beginning with a substantive introduction and concluding with an afterward that reflects on key issues, the volume is arranged thematically and maintains a careful balance between theoretical analysis and the presentation of empirical data in a variety of forms. This work is an important contribution to filling the gap in our understanding of the historical evolution and contemporary dynamics of Indonesian sexualities. It will be of interest to an interdisciplinary range of scholars and academics, including those in gender and sexuality studies, global health, sexual and reproductive health, anthropology, sociology and Asian studies.
