Abstract
This chapter is a commentary on the edited volume Classroom-based interventions in different subject areas. Rather than summarising and critiquing the individual chapters that make up the book, the commentary instead aims to situate the intervention studies they report within wider debates about relationships between research and teaching. The commentary begins by framing these debates in terms of the supposed lack of relevance of much educational research to classroom practice, drawing on arguments about the different ways in which researchers and teachers create and validate knowledge. Two questions are then used to examine the contribution made by the intervention studies to these debates: (1) What is the nature of collaboration between academic researchers and teachers on classroom-based interventions? (2) What kinds of knowledge are produced by such collaborations, and how is this knowledge shared and used? The first question is addressed by examining how and why researcher–teacher partnerships were initiated, the roles of participants, and the purposes of the research. The second question addresses issues of context, scale, and transferability of research findings. This analysis reveals issues faced by researchers and practitioners in sharing meaning across their respective worlds.
