Abstract
Cognitive load is a human factor which contributes to the outcome of elite sporting performance. Compared to the focus on physical load, cognitive load is seldom considered in sport. From the available evidence in areas other than sport, huge potential exists to improve athletic performance through better understanding and managing cognitive load in elite athletes. This chapter provides an overview of cognitive load and its importance in the sporting environment. The definition of cognitive load and an overview of cognitive demands in sport, including relevant theoretical concepts is provided. Contextualisation of the evidence-based detrimental impacts of cognitive fatigue, a result of cognitive load, on sporting performance is considered. Finally, practical applications and recommendations for monitoring and managing cognitive load in the applied sporting environment are provided and areas for future research are identified.
