Abstract

ADHD Anxiety ARFID Lived experience Sensory processing Sensory sensitivity
In this chapter, Josh, at the age of 23 years, shares some of his thoughts and experiences of having a highly sensitive sensory processing system and being diagnosed with auditory processing disorder, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. His mother then shares some reflections, acknowledging how much she has learned from Josh. In Josh's experience, having an altered sensory processing system is not the same as having a mental health condition. It is not something that you develop at some stage of your life and can recall who you were before the condition and who you are afterwards. It is something that you were born with and slowly grow to understand and learn to manage. It is related to various mental health conditions, however. All people have individual experiences of sensory processing, and the experience presented in this chapter is just one example.
