Abstract

Navigating the transition from childhood to adolescence, and learning the skills needed to self-regulate, can feel like trying to navigate a foreign city without a map. But what if there were a map and a compass that could help adolescents, and their families, create their own pathway to regulation? The importance of developing self-regulation skills in adolescence cannot be underestimated, and clinicians have a role in enhancing both adolescent skills and the skills of their caregivers. There is a need for a nuanced, targeted approach to promoting self-regulation in the adolescent period. This chapter provides an outline of Regulation Roadmap© tools and their application to adolescent mental health. By customizing and integrating sensory approaches to the adolescent population, clinicians have the potential to contribute toward improving adolescent self-regulation and mental health.
