Abstract
Biological control remains one of the most viable and successful management options for the control of insect pests in plantation forests. Classical biological control has been the most common approach used in response to the introduction and spread of several serious non-native forest insect pests, particularly in Eucalyptus and Pinus plantations. The implementation of augmentative and conservation biological control approaches, and research associated with these approaches, has generally received less attention but can play an important role in the control of various native, and non-native insect pests. Regardless of the strategy used, substantial multi-disciplinary and collaborative research is required for the successful development and implementation of a biological control programme. These collaborations can involve the sharing or exchange of biological control agents, as well as the sharing of knowledge related to the ecology, biology and genetics, as well as the rearing, release, and efficacy of the biological control agents. Such collaborations would benefit from structured and long-term agreements; for example, BiCEP is a multi-institutional and multinational agreement to support the development and implementation of biological control agents for insect pests of Eucalyptus plantations. More such initiatives are needed.
