Abstract

Curriculum and Pedagogy
The concept of language learning strategy measurement is of great relevance to researchers concerned with language strategy assessment and more widely, in the field of second language acquisition. Despite a long research tradition, Japanese language has mainly featured as the target language in published research about strategy use in regards to orthography, specifically kanji learning. Although strategy measurement inventories have beendeveloped for kanji learning, "holistic" strategy use inventorieshave not been a focus for researchers. In this regard, holisticmeans all modes of language use, listening, speaking, readingand writing. This chapter describes the process of developinga holistic task-based strategy measurement survey, sensitiveto the demands of a specific target language (Japanese) in aforeign language learning environment.
