Abstract
Listening to our surrounding acoustic environment reveals the social, cultural and ecological layers of a place and time. Our soundscape is constant, immersive and dynamic – it reveals embodied information impossible to discover with other senses. The act of environmental field recording in the wilderness has been a long fasciation of both artists and scientists since the invention of accessible recording technologies. From remote acoustic sensing in the canopy of the Amazon rainforest to hydrophone arrays beneath the arctic ice – sound exposes the spatial and temporal complexities of life on earth. Our soundscape also provides a wealth of critical information about the health of our ecosystems. In the words Bernie Krause “a picture may be worth a thousand words, but a natural soundscape is worth a thousand pictures.” This article introduces artistic and scientific explorations in biophony, through the lens of acoustic ecology and the emerging possibilities of ecoacoustics.
