Abstract
Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) has long played a role in the design and evaluation of sport systems. This chapter introduces HFE and associated models and methods and provides an overview of previous applications in sport. For the reader already familiar with HFE, the intention is to provide an overview of the sports HFE work undertaken to date. For the reader not familiar with HFE or its core theories and methods, the intention is to provide an overview of HFE and how it has been used in sport settings. Previous sports HFE applications are categorised into physical, cognitive, and systems applications based on the theoretical and/or methodological approach adopted. Studies covering a diverse set of issues are discussed, including injury prevention, performance analysis, performance optimisation, sports equipment and clothing design, and sports performance analysis. It is concluded that HFE has a substantial role to play in sports research and practice. Further, we argue that the increasingly complex and technology-centric nature of sport systems may be increasing the need for HFE input.
