Abstract
Can intersectional, anti-racist, feminist, and minority educators safely dissent in their workplaces? Are we seen as ‘misbehaving’ when we raise concerns? What are the parameters of institutional allyship and advocacy? Being advocates for truth-telling and social justice in a neoliberal organisation may lead to intersectional, feminist, and minority educators having to fight employers and thereby affect their ability to stay employed. Not addressing racism, sexism, and homophobia may leave educators, particularly those in helping professions, in distress and with ethical issues, leading to burnout. We identify as one or more of the following: Indigenous, queer, women, disabled, living with mental health issues individuals working in Australia and North America. We discuss our lived experiences of dissent in higher education. We explore our rights to assert and voice ourselves and our identities whilst grappling with the realities and experiences of what this means for ongoing employment within the academy. We discuss the kinds of dissent that can exist in this ambiguous space and aim to understand the ability of educators to create spaces for professional and personal resistance where needed.
