Abstract
Corymbia ptychocarpa can grow to 12m in height, with smooth leaves that can reach 320mm in length (Bininj Kunwok, n.d.). These leaves have been traditionally used by indigenous communities as a musical instrument (Bininj Kunwok, n.d.). Other traditional uses of this tree include as firewood with long lasting coals, and hollow stems used as long smoking pipes (Bininj Kunwok, n.d.) The bark of this tree is rough, the colouring grey to black, with fibrous to tessellated texture (Bininj Kunwok, n.d.). Producing attractive red or pink flowers mainly during summer and autumn, C. ptychocarpa is native to Western Australia and the Northern Territory (JCU, n.d.). The natural habitat of C. ptychocarpa is along creeks and damp sites, although it is commonly used as an ornamental plant in eastern and southern Australia (Taylor & Davies, 2008). C. ptychocarpa is a host plant for the parasitoid Fergusonia giblindavisi, although not within its native range, only found in trees planted in Brisbane and Cairns (Taylor & Davies, 2008). Outside of Australia, a subspecies, C. ptychocarpa subsp. aptycha, has been introduced to China as an ornamental landscape feature, due to the attractive inflorescence and unique leaves (Yan Yang et al., 2015).
