UniSC Plant Profile - Goodeniaceae, Dampiera stricta

Appears in UniSC Plant Profiles
Abstract
Endemic to Australia, Dampiera stricta is distributed along the south-eastern coast of the nation, extending from Queensland to New South Wales, Victoria, and even Tasmania. The species derives its name from William Dampier, an influential botanist and pioneer (Sheather, 2020), and stricta meaning the upright and erect growth habit (ANPSA, 2024). Widely distributed and commonly encountered in the wild, D. stricta is a small perennial herb that propagates through suckering, growing to heights of 60 centimetres and spreading up to 1 meter across (ANPSA, 2024; Sheather, 2020). It primarily thrives on sandstone substrates, inhabiting heath, shrublands, and dry woodland forests. Its deep mauve-blue coloration is visible throughout much of the year, with its prominence peaking during spring. (Sheather, 2020; ANPSA, 2024). Native bees, beetles, and flies are believed to be the main pollinators when visiting (Gilpin, Power & Cook, 2021). Following a fire, D. stricta regenerates rapidly and can be observed in significant numbers (Sheather, 2020).
