Abstract
Lepironia articulata is a conspicuous rush-like, evergreen, perennial sedge with grey-green culms growing erect up to two metres in coastal wallum wetlands from central New South Wales to northern Queensland and the Northern Territory (Marshall & McGregor 2011). Native to Malaysia, this dominant littoral macrophyte provides important habitat structure for birds and aquatic invertebrate and a food source for freshwater turtles. The flowers is a narrow, brown-black pseudo-spikelet, 1-4 centimetre long with two keeled glumes, the lower of which is obtuse (PlantNET 2023). Sensitivity to fluctuations in water depth limit the distribution of this species. Recognised as an effective phytoremediation plant, the root-associated bacteria remove pollutants such as phosphorous, nitrogen and heavy metals from domestic wastewater (Asadullah & Tohdee 2019; Tenzin et al 2021). The hollow culms assisting this aquatic plant to float have inspired biodegradable alternatives to plastic drinking straws (Said et al. 2021).
