Abstract
Gahnia sieberiana is commonly seen around Australia s eastern and southern states (PlantNET n.d.). Growing tall, this sedge can reach heights of 3m (ANPSA 2023). The genus Gahnia has the common name saw-sedge due to their rough edge of the leaves, with the potential to cause injury when grabbed without care (ANPSA 2023). G. sieberiana, like many sedges, prefers growing in damp areas near sources of water, or in flood prone areas (ANPSA 2023). Although having this preference for damp conditions, G. sieberiana can be found growing on drier hillsides in woodland, and on sand or silt (PlantNET n.d.). This sedge flowers in spring and summer, leaving behind it s shiny red seeds (ANPSA 2023). These seeds were finely ground into a flour, which was used traditionally to create bread by the Koori people (Patten 2017). The Koori people also used the leaves of G. sieberiana and G. aspera to weave baskets, mats, and create string (Patten 2017).
