USC Plant Profile - Proteaceae, Banksia robur
University of the Sunshine Coast
2021
Appears in UniSC Plant Profiles
Abstract
Distributed from Queensland to southern New South Wales, and occasionally occurring on the Cape York Peninsula, this species usually grows in swamps and sandy environments (Australian Native Plant Society Australia 2015) and is part of Australian history. The banksias smouldering pods allowed Aboriginal people to carry fire on them (Stewart and Percival 1997). Also, sweet nectar can be extracted from its fresh flowers or its cones by infusing them in water (Stewart and Percival 1997). The first specimen of banksia was collected in 1770 in Australia by Joseph Banks, after his arrival with Captain Cook at Botany Bay, which gave the genus its name (Stewart and Percival 1997).
