Abstract
The Xanthostemon chrysanthus species in the Myrataceae family is endemic to Australia (DES 2022), first described in 1864 by Ferdinand von Mueller (Clarke 2021). Xanthostemon is derived from Greek xanthos meaning yellow and stemon being stamens. chrysanthus originating from Greek chrysos, gold and anthos meaning flower (ANPS 2016). The Xanthostemon chrysanthus flowers in summer and autumn, with the flowers being bright yellow (ANPS 2016). The golden penda usually grows along creeks and watercourses in tropical rainforests (ATRP 2020), with humid conditions (Clarke 2021). The golden penda is a favourable species in direct sun and moist soils, regularly used in home gardens and landscaping due to the clusters of attractive flowers (ANPS 2016). Propagation from fresh seeds is easy, but germination occurs at a slower rate (ANPS 2016). The golden penda is the floral emblem of Cairns, QLD (Clarke 2021). Birds are the primary pollinators of the species (ATRP 2020). The folkloric practices of the Xanthostemon chrysanthus has been found to be a blood purifier for liver and pulmonary complaints (Godofredo & Stuart Jr 2019).
