Abstract
There is a move towards more effective and efficient means of competency assessment in Nutrition and Dietetics. Currently, the focus is on the development and evaluation of e-portfolios with less focus on the platform of delivery. However, gaining access to computers is a significant perceived barrier for students completing e-portfolios in work integrated learning (WIL) settings. E-portfolio delivery has been revolutionised in nursing education, with access to hand-held digital devices such as tablet PCs. These have been shown to offer students advantages to portfolio completion in WIL settings and provide more flexibility, improved time-management, and enhanced communication. To date, the use of tablets as an e-portfolio delivery platform has yet to be researched in dietetic training in Australia. Therefore, the aim of this project was to develop and trial an iPad app (WILMA) for students completing Individual Case Management across rural locations in Queensland. The use of the app enables fast, safe and efficient transfer of data during placement subsequently resulting in better learning outcomes for students. This provides immediate evidence of the student's progression, and timely and effective feedback to assist with selfreflection and skill development by facilitating three-way dynamic communication between the university, student and placement site. This project is the first of its kind to investigate the use of an app designed specifically for the purpose of assessing competency within Nutrition and Dietetics, and subsequently has broad-reaching application. We will provide an overview of the app functionality and preliminary feedback from early adopters.
