The effect of cycling intensity on running economy in triathletes

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of prior cycling intensity on running economy. Furthermore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the vertical oscillations of the centre of mass (VCOM) and economy (oxygen consumption) during running at different intensities. Methods: Six male and three female well trained (V02max 63.5 ± 7.2) triathletes were recruited. After completing maximal treadmill and cycle tests and being familiarised with the study protocol, each subject completed three 15-min submaximal treadmill running trials, 1-week apart in a random order. Each of the three run trials was preceded by either a 40-min bout of low intensity cycling (LOW, 10% below BLa threshold), or a work-matched bout of high intensity cycling (HIGH, 5% above BLa threshold), or the run trial was completed in isolation (ISO) with no prior cycling. Oxygen uptake (V02), minute ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), blood lactate concentration ([BLa−]), and VCOM were recorded during the three submaximal run trials. Results/conclusion: Analysis of variance showed no significant trial effect on V02 during the submaximal running trials. There was, however, a significant trial effect on VE and [BLa−]; there was also a significant relationship (r = 0.68, p < 0.01) between [BLa−] and VE. VCOM did not differ between the trials. These findings show that the intensity of prior cycling does not affect VCOM or economy during subsequent treadmill running in triathletes.
