Abstract
Community pharmacies are an important setting for health promotion and primary health care. They are a readily accessible location often situated within places of convenience, utilized by a large proportion of the population and enjoy a respected position within the community. The Growing Years pharmacy study employed a mix of strategies under an umbrella strategy of practice accreditation, including staff continuing education, in store social marketing and guidance materials. Evaluation of these strategies included pre and post mystery shopper study, pre and post staff questionnaires, customer surveys, sales data trend analysis and qualitative interviews with professional staff. Results indicate high acceptability of these strategies and provide support for further utilization of community pharmacy for nutrition intervention and promotion. This case study provides an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) relevant to public health nutrition intervention management in community pharmacy settings. Practical knowledge and insights gained from intervention experiences in this part of the Growing Years Project can assist practitioners in undertaking nutrition interventions that are well accepted and supported in pharmacies. Evidence from multi-method evaluation will be used to illustrate intervention effectiveness and highlight opportunities for further work by nutritionists in partnership with the pharmacy profession.
