Abstract
Introduction: Occupational therapists need to align with evidence-based practice as well as meet the continuing professional development (CPD) requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). There has been rapid growth in the technologies used to provide CPD. Occupational therapists need to overcome barriers and embrace social media as a vessel for providing relevant, effective, accessible and cost-efficient learning opportunitiesAims: The aim of this poster is to demonstrate how social media (specifically Facebook, Twitter and blogs) provides a mechanism for CPD. It will draw attention to the range of CPD activities available and empower occupational therapists to overcome barriers to engagement. Method: Occupational therapists internationally are using the OT4OT and sister 4OT Facebook pages to share experiences, ask questions, offer resources, and brainstorm ideas and solutions. Twitter is experiencing growth, from tweeting at conferences to newly launched monthly tweet chats. Networked blogs are becoming more common as a readily accessible repository of shared experiences, resources and knowledge. Practice implications: Social media enables practitioners to effectively fulfil up to 25 hours of the CPD required for National Registration. The category of 'online learning involving discussion, chat rooms, contribution to list-serves' covers all aspects of professional use of social media. Conclusion: With the introduction of AHPRA, occupational therapists will increasingly be seeking new ways to meet CPD requirements but may be unsure of what social media has to offer. This poster provides practical examples of social media usage to illustrate the range of CPD opportunities available.
