Abstract
Drawing on a literature review prepared for the Australian Psychological Society on concerns related to the mental health and wellbeing of refugees and refugee claimants in the Australian context, this paper examines factors influencing refugees' psychological adjustment in the resettlement phase, including systemic and socio-political factors impacting on resettlement. Research findings suggest that mental health and wellbeing outcomes are influenced by complex combinations of predisplacement, displacement, resettlement and systemic factors, with detention of, or award of temporary residence to, refugees who are already experiencing psychological distress on arrival being a case in point. More research is needed into the combined, path-wise relationships between the psychosocial pre-determinants and psychological sequelae of the refugee experience.
