Abstract
Untung Waluyo will report on the first cycle of research that has been conducted for his PhD thesis. The thesis concerns the in-country Indonesian program conducted by the RUILI Consortium of four Australian universities and the University of Mataram, Indonesia. It evaluates the implementation of the incountry program at the University of Mataram, and aims to improve the in-country service according to its users' perceived expectation. The paper will identify the problems faced by the program, detail the professional development intervention program that was used to address these problems, and describe the participants' perceptions and evaluation of the program. The Wilcoxon-test procedure was usedto compare concerns and advantages of in-country Indonesian program from teachers' and students' perspectives. The tentative result of the study indicated that the professional development brought about positive changes in participants' teaching practice, confidence, and engagement with students, and teachers' responsiveness to student expectation. Implications of these findings for professional development and teacher change will be elaborated.
