Abstract

Anthropology Language Studies Information Systems
Nauvikhaq' is an Inuinnaqtun term that translates to 'a place to grow.' It is a fitting name for theoral history database being developed in Ulukhaktok, a small Inuit community in the western Canadian Arctic, as the database will always have room to grow with new stories, songs, and teachings. Nauvikhaq is a partnership between the Inuvialuit Cultural Resource Center, Helen Kalvak Elihakvik (school), and researchers at the University of Guelph and McGill University with funding from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. The intent of the database is to protect the community's oral history by digitizing cassette tapes and making them available online for community members to hear them. Stories are complimented with photographs, and Inuinnaqtun recordings have written English translations. The database was designed together with community members to ensure that it is user-friendly and that new recordings can be continually uploaded. Nauvikhaq is for generations to come, so that they to can learn about life on the land and hear Inuinnaqtun, a language that is threatened.
