Abstract

Cultural Studies Curriculum and Pedagogy postcolonialism environmental ethics cross-cultural representations South Africa Eco-Schools
Developing 'an ethic of care' is a key focus for environmental educators. Thinking around this issue has often drawn on ideas from environmental philosophy and psychology, locating such issues as the preserve of the individual. A postcolonial reading of an ethics of care adopts a relational, historicised, and fractured perspective- challenging the ways such concepts are assumed to be universal. This paper examines representations from South Africa of an ethic of care. It problematizes the notion of a universal ethical standard and thereby leaves space for contested and hybrid notions of care.
