Abstract
At the University of the Sunshine Coast it was decided that the paramedic students would benefit from studying the course Challenges to Mental Health, which was developed for nursing students and taught by nursing academics with strong mental health backgrounds and qualifications. In 2010 for the first time, students are being introduced to mental health concepts in a course which is offered in two different modes - on-campus for the nursing students, and online for the paramedic students who are currently spending 40 weeks 'on road'. It has been deemed important for the paramedic students to engage with their nursing counterparts through online discussions. The paramedic program leader considers that mental health nurses are the ideal teachers for his students. The interdisciplinary approach is stressed within the course, with 165 nursing students and 35 paramedic students enrolled. Prior to commencement each group participated in a survey of attitudes and knowledge, which will be repeated at the conclusion of the course. As the paramedic students are encountering consumers with mental health problems in their daily work experience, they will possibly reveal different responses from the nursing students who will have only 4 weeks clinical placements, not necessarily in a 'mental health' setting. The findings will be presented. This initiative is reflective of partnership and collaboration of disciplines at an academic institution and furthermore reveals that nurses are seen to be leading the education. The findings will be presented.
