Abstract
By linking people and place, geographers are critical to issues that connect sustainability and regional engagement. One concept used by geographers is that of 'sense of place'. In this paper, I will show how understanding an intangible notion such as sense of place can have 'real' benefits for our region, in helping us make 'sense' of 'place'. I will use the example of a research project titled Indigenous Attachment. Engagement and Protocol in Natural and Cultural Heritage Management, that is exploring notions related to 'sense of place' and their application to sustainability and regional engagement. The project is funded by the Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management Inc., and there are several anticipated benefits of this research that I will outline. By examining the complex and multiple ways of thinking about these notions, I will argue that even our understandings of 'impacts' should continue to be critiqued, re-examined and reworked in a circular way that leads us toward better sustainability and regional engagement. Thus, a critical geography and its contributions to place-making is fundamental to making 'sense' of 'place'.
