Abstract
In 2004 I moved from the UK to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. In 2008 after trying and failing to fit into the models of care available on the coast I naively set up as an independent midwife. The journey I embarked upon was one of the most challenging experiences of my career and my life. I learned so much about myself, women, the Australian maternity system, money, equipment and support. I experienced despair and joy in equal measures and made many mistakes along the way. I was forced to reevaluate myself as a midwife and redefine my relationships with the women and families I care for. In this presentation I will share my journey with you, provide an insight into the reality of independent practice and discuss issues for midwives to consider in relation to their own practice and the future of the profession.
